Michael Birley (Birley Michael Antony Langton)
COMMITTEE OF MANAGEMENT: Chair
I grew up in the North West of England near Manchester and went to school in the English Midlands. After dropping out of Medical School to go into Shipping, I have been working as a shipbroker for the last 42 years, 23 of them in Hong Kong. Today I work for the Langton Shipping Group.
I first came to Hong Kong in 1984, have two children from my first marriage Frederica and Monty who both live in London, but are frequent visitors to Hong Kong. I met Anne in Hong Kong and we were married at Union Church 9 years ago, adding her children Zachary and Ceilidh to the family as well!
I was christened and confirmed in the Church of England, but it was not until 2001 that I committed my life to the Lord during an Alpha Course at Holy Trinity Brompton in London. After that I became more involved with Alpha, helping and leading small groups and eventually becoming an Alpha advisor when we moved out of London in 2002. After my first marriage broke up, I found the HTB Divorce and Separation Recovery Course a vital part in the process of reconstructing my life and as a result became involved with helping on this course in London and eventually assisting other churches to start their own courses.
I joined the congregation at the Union Church 14 years ago on my return to Hong Kong and served on COM for three years from 2009. Anne and I ran the Recovering from Divorce and Separation ministry here and I have continued to be involved in Alpha and Family Life. Prayer has been be a bedrock for me in my walk and together with others at Union we pray weekly for the Church and our community. A revelation for me was the importance of the Trinity and the work that Holy Spirit plays in changing lives and situations.
I have been honoured to serve the Lord and Union Church during a third term on the Committee of Management, including the role of Chairman in the last 12 months.
Our church is in the process of rebuilding at 22A Kennedy Road but I feel more importantly, also building on our the spiritual bedrock and developing the new leadership team to take us toward into the 20’s—“a hope and a future for those who love the Lord and are called according to His purpose”. My hope is that we can extend that message to many more in our community who have not yet experienced the joy and excitement of a personal relationship with Jesus.
